Abstract
This report analyzes the rights of indigenous peoples, rights that have been trampled on for centuries. Starting from the recognition of the self-determination principle, it examines the stages that led to the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The second part of the paper focuses on the indigenous claims in Latin America and on the instruments for the protection of the native people’s collective rights. A special attention is given to the situation of the indigenous communities in Bolivia and Ecuador after the constitutional changes carried out by Evo Morales and Rafael Correa.
